Spring  is here and summer will be upon us before you know it. Summer  is my favorite season because I get to spend most of my time outdoors and of course lots of BBQ. Summer also means a lot of people will be getting their sunscreens. Back in the days, I would just buy my favorite sunscreen  Banana Boat. But, now that I know that whatever you put on the skin it get absorbed into the bloodstream;  I have made the switch to natural sunscreens.  Last year I used Thinkbaby sunscreen and loved it and this year I will be testing out Badger sunscreen.

Yesterday, I happened to pass by the sunscreen display and began to wonder what is really is those sunscreens. I decided to do a search on Banana Boat since it is a popular conventional brand and here is what I found.

Ingredients for Banana Boat Sunscreen:

Active Ingredients: Homosalate (15.0%), Octinoxate (7.5%), Octisalate (5.0%), Titanium Dioxide (2.4%). Inactive Ingredients: Water, Isohexadecane, Ozokerite, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Dibutyl Adipate, PEG-8, C30-38 Olefin/Isopropyl Maleate/MA Copolymer, Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Chloride, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Retinyl Palmitate, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Disodium EDTA, Alumina

I decided to compare Banana Boat with a natural sunscreen and choose Thinkbaby Sunscreen

Here is the Thinkbaby Sunscreen Ingredients

Almost all the ingredients found in the natural sunscreen are edible…not that you want to eat it and the ingredients in the conventional sunscreen are not.  My midwife use to say if you don’t recognize the name or can’t pronounce it, then don’t use it.
